Ruffled Barrette

by Tina Mancuso, tina_mancuso@yahoo.com

Materials:
Worsted or sport-weight yarn of your choice -- I used Lion Brand Glitter Magic to make one in black and one in white, but chenille or any other yarn you like will work as well.
Aluminum crochet hook, size G
3" barrette blank

Instructions:

Take the barrette apart.  Most barrettes have 3 parts, the top, middle, and the clip.  You should work only with the top part, the part that faces outward when the barrette is in your hair.  The top should have two little vertical metal pieces extending down at each end -- these hold the clip on.  Do not crochet beyond these pieces even though the metal of the barrette will still be showing at the ends.  Once the barrette is finished, you won't be able to see the metal.  If you work beyond the metal clip-holders, the crochet might slip off with time.

Row 1:  Join the yarn to the barrette with a sl st.  Ch 1 and sc evenly across the length of the barrette.  This will be awkward, but it is possible.  Try to work so that the top loops of the sc's go down the middle of the top of the barrette.  If you can't, you can always adjust it when you're done with the row.

Row 2:  Ch 3, turn.  Working in back loops only, dc in first sc; 2 dc in each sc across.

Row 3:  Ch 3, turn.  Working in both loops, dc in first dc, 2 dc in each dc across.

Row 4:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in first dc, ch 3, (skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 3) across.

Either fasten off and join yarn to the front loop of the first sc in row 1, or sl st in the sides of rows 2 and 3 down to the first sc in row 1.

Row 5:  Ch 3, dc in front lp of first sc in row 1.  Holding the first ruffle down and working in front loops of the sc's in row 1, 2 dc in each sc across.

Row 6:  Repeat row 3.

Row 7:  Repeat row 4.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
